In this version we are combining two of our favorite things, Oreos and our favorite rich chocolate cake. Cookies and Cream is such a beloved flavor combination, and this Cookies and Cream Cake is the ultimate crowd-pleaser, featuring layers of tender, velvety chocolate cake covered in our favorite Oreo-packed cream cheese icing.

Why You’ll Love This Oreo Chocolate Cake
Texture: Since there are crushed Oreo folded directly into the icing, you get that iconic cookies and cream crunch in every bite.
Buttermilk Cake: The chocolate cake is made with unsweetened cocoa powder and buttermilk. This ensures it’s not overly sweet, but it still remains perfectly moist and velvety.
The Cream Cheese Frosting: Unlike a standard American buttercream, our cookies and cream icing uses a cream cheese base. We like using this because the slight tang of the cream cheese cuts through the richness of the chocolate and pairs perfectly with the sweet Oreo filling.


Tips for the Perfect Layer Cake
- Chocolate cake – we use our favorite chocolate cake recipe (linked here). Our favorite way to do this is with 3 6” pans to get a tall cake (we like the look of a smaller higher cake). However, 2 8” pans will also work.
- Cookies and Cream icing – the cookies and cream icing is a cream cheese based icing with oreo crumbs. Delicious is an understatement.

Decorating the Cookies and Cream Cake:
- Level the layers: For a stable and bakery-level cake, we like to level out the layers with a serrated knife for an even look.
- Add a chocolate ganache: If you want a drip cake look, pipe slightly warm chocolate ganache off the sides of the cake.
- Oreos: We use whole oreos and sprinkle oreo crumbs around the base to decorate the cake.


Cookies and Cream Cake
Ingredients
- 1 chocolate cake recipe below, cooked in 3 6” rounds or 2 8” rounds
- 1 cream cheese room temperature
- 1 stick butter room temperature
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon almond extract
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 cup oreos finely crumbled
- Extra oreos for decorating
Instructions
- On medium high, whip cream cheese, butter, extracts, and salt for 1-2 minutes until fluffy. Turn the mixer down to low, and add in the powder sugar 1 cup at a time. After it is mixed in, turn up the mixer speed to medium high and whip for 2 minutes. Turn off the mixer, and add 1 cup of crushed oreo crumbs until just combined.
- Use icing and cooled cake rounds to frost the cake.
