A spicy watermelon margarita is officially our drink of the summer. Spicy margaritas are delicious in their own right, (you can’t go wrong with a classic margarita with a little jalapeno and a tajin rim), but when you also add a little bit of watermelon juice, we are entirely sold. It is simple, refreshing, and the perfect drink for summer.
Making this spicy watermelon margarita is just as simple as a classic, but we add a splash of watermelon juice. The watermelon juice adds flavor, sweetness and a pink color. The rest of the ingredients follow a standard margarita: agave, tequila, lime juice, and cointreau. Any triple sec will work, but we prefer cointreau. We also prefer to use a reposado tequila versus other varieties, but a blanco/sliver will also work. To make it spicy, we add a few slices of jalapeno and tajin to the rim (these of course can be adjusted depending on your preference). The tajin can also be swapped out for salt. Finally, to make it watermelon we add a little bit of watermelon juice for flavor and color.
When it comes to watermelon juice, you can buy it in the store but it is also very easy to make from scratch. To make the juice, simply add a few chunks of watermelon to a blender (or more than a few depending on how much juice you want to yield) and blend. After it is smooth, strain it through a sieve so all the pulp is removed.
Spicy Watermelon Margarita
Ingredients
- ½ oz agave
- 1 ½ oz watermelon juice
- 1 ½ oz tequila reposado
- 1 oz cointreau
- 1 oz lime juice
- 3 slices of jalapeno
- Tajin and lime juice to line
- Ice
Instructions
- Add the tajin to a small plate (we like to make a little pile in the center the press the glass on). Line the rim of a glass with lime juice and press into the pile of tajin turning after each part of the glass is coated. Once the rim is formed, fill with ice and set aside.
- Add ice to a shaker. Pour over the agave, watermelon juice, tequila, cointreau, and lime juice. Add in 3 jalapenos. Shake for about 30 seconds until very cold.
- Strain the drink over the tajin rimmed glass with ice (the ice from the shaker should not make it into the drink glass). Add the jalapenos from the shaker back into the glass if they are strained out with the shaker ice and serve.
