Welcome to our Kitchen-by-the-Sea! We’re Maddie and Jules, the two sisters behind Kitchen-by-the-Sea. We love to entertain, cook, and share recipes. We share tips and recipes on all components of entertaining from tables to charcuterie to dinner, and, most importantly, dessert. We also love sharing outtakes of our life in our costal hometown of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California (yes, that is where the name Kitchen-by-the-Sea comes from).
Our love for food started from the time spent on the ranch with our grandparents. Our grandpa ran a dairy farm and grandma cooked fresh, home-cooked meals for everyone on the ranch. As kids, we watched her cook large, family style meals, blessing all those who walked into her kitchen.
As we grew up, we began to cook meals of our own. Coming from a big family, meals were always served family style. No matter the occasion, food was served on a big table scattered with dishes and spoons so everyone was comfortable digging in. Our style of cooking embodies just that. We love making family style that is pretty enough for a dinner party but simple enough for a home cook’s week night dinner.
We are so grateful to welcome you to our kitchen!
Our favorite recipes
Jules:
“When it comes to my all-time favorite recipe, I have to go with chocolate chip cookies. It’s a staple, always delicious, and something I could (and maybe should…) eat every day. Plus, our favorite version has toffee and sea salt. I mean does it get any better than chocolate chip toffee cookies with sea salt… Plus, I have perfected them over the years and now get to share that recipe here with all of you! Maddie is usually the one baking and I film, but cookies, specifically chocolate chip cookies, are one of my specialties, so they have an extra special place in my heart. You can find the full recipe here.”
Maddie:
“I will pretty much take mac and cheese in any form… I am of the firm belief that it doesn’t get much better than pasta and cheese (oh and a little… or a lot… of butter). This mac and cheese is a happy medium between a box and a homemade baked mac and cheese. It is a fifteen minute stovetop mac and cheese so it comes together (almost) as fast as a box but with the delicious flavor of a homemade variety. It is one of our favorites, so much so that is an annual tradition to make this as part of our meal on Christmas Eve. You can find the full recipe here.”
